DG compost summit 1

From left, Nick Maravell of Nick’s Organic Farm in Adamstown and Potomac, Mehryl Mayne of Mayne’s Tree Farm in Buckeystown, and Doug Alexander of Back Yard Composting in Cheverly, talk with Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner about the complicated permitting process that farmers go through in order to compost.

More than 70 people attended a composting summit at Fox Haven Farm on Monday to learn more about the composting initiative in Frederick. County Executive Jan Gardner highlighted the progress Frederick County has made but also the goals it hopes to meet going forward.

Gardner said the county has significant progress to make — particularly in food waste recycling — in order to meet the state’s goals for 2025.
