The Best Wine Delivery Services

Following
This article is more than 3 years old.

Nothing gifts quite like wine. It pairs better with food than anything else on earth. There’s a bottle to suit every palate. It just keeps getting better the longer you hold onto it. And thanks to the proliferation of delivery services, there’s never been an easier time to get your mom the wine she so obviously deserves on her special day. But there are some clunkers out there. Now that the holiday is just a week away, you don’t have time to mess around. Order mom something special from any of these sites and she’ll be toasting to you in no time.

Winc

If you already have a good sense of what your mom typically drinks, this is a great subscription service to set her up with. You can select individual bottles narrowed down by varietal. The site currently offers $20 off when you purchase 4 or more. Or you can become a subscriber and have 3 bottles sent to you monthly, based upon your chosen flavor profiles, for $39.

Blue Apron Wine

The same company that famously offers DIY meal boxes is now making a splash in the world of wine. For $66/month, mom gets six, separate 500-ml bottles (2/3rd regular size), along with tasting and pairing suggestions for each. Shipping is included and there’s no contract to sign, so it’s easy to cancel at any time.

Plonk Wine Club

Is your mom more into the organic stuff? Well there’s a wine club just for her. Plonk is a touch pricier than the rest—at $110/month. But in exchange she’ll receive four bottles of sustainably grown wines per delivery, each one sourced from an acclaimed small-scale producer.

Vinebox

This one’s a little different. It specializes in a by-the-glass model. For $79 mom gets nine vials of vino every three months; a seasonal representation. If she’s into discovering what’s new and next on the vine, this is the one for her. The company prides itself on exposing customers to ‘hidden gems’: hard to find labels from a global stable of top-tier producers.

Firstleaf

Does your mom enjoy her wine casually, but want to delve deeper? Firstleaf is the subscription service for her. A quick survey will score her a box of half a dozen wines based upon those general preferences. Then there’s an active feedback process. Based upon how she rates those first few bottles, the service will use the data to inform future shipments. The initial shipment is $80, and subsequent deliveries can be scheduled to arrive either monthly, 6 times per year, or seasonally.

Saucey

Unlike the others on this list, Saucey isn’t a subscription service. Instead, it partners with local bottle shops in major cities including Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Washington DC. If your mom lives in one of these general areas then you can order her something very specific according to her tastes—so long as its available in her region. When they have it, she’ll get it to her door as quickly as 30 minutes after you order.

Wine Society

Say your mom isn’t into the whole glass and cork thing. And maybe labels, in general, don’t really impress her. Well, Wine Society might be a perfect fit. The service aims to remove all pretense and snobbery from sipping. For $39.20 she gets three large cans of wine—16 servings in total. One red, one white, and one rosé, each promising an optimal blend between dry and sweet.

Harry & David

This purveyor of gourmet gift baskets is a good site to search if you want wine to be part of the present rather than the whole thing. For example, you can ship roses with a bottle of rosé. Or chocolate truffles with a bottle of Oregon pinot noir. If you want to stick with simply vino, however, they do offer a great price on six reds (or 1 white) of your choice—$120. Purchase a $29 Celebrations Passport, and you’ll get free shipping for one full year on orders across all of its partner sites, including 1800Flowers.com and The Popcorn Factory.
