CHENNAI: The city wing of the food safety department on Friday began a three-day food festival on Island Grounds here to promote traditional and healthy food.
The weekend festival would create awareness about a healthy diet, promote millets, discourage the reuse of cooking oil and stop packing hot food in polythene wrappers, health minister Ma Subramanian said.

It would also encourage people to read food labels and eat organic food, Subramanian said. At least 150 stalls would serve a variety of traditional cuisine, high on millets. The exhibition will also promote messages to reduce salt and sugar content.
The food safety department will create awareness about its project to feed the hungry with excess food from convention centres, IT canteens, marriage and birthday parties.
"More than 10 lakh people have had food at least once through this project," he said.
The event will have cooking competitions and creative events besides an awareness walk at 7am on August 14.
