PORTLAND, Ore. – The Multnomah County Health Department is asking the public to not burn wood this weekend.

The health department issued a yellow air quality advisory Saturday due to stagnant air conditions in the area. The stagnant air can trap pollutants, making it unhealthy to breathe. This can especially impact children and those with respiratory disease.

The health department asks people limit unnecessary burning, including using fireplaces, wood stoves, and outdoor burning, on Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21 until the advisory is lifted.

If wood is your only source of heat, you can still heat your home with wood. If you must burn, the health department asks that you use dry, seasoned wood, use a cleaner-burning EPA or DEQ-certified gas or wood stove, and burn small, hot fires.
